Magnesium

Element 12 · chemical symbol: Mg

These Vrulum profiles mention Magnesium by name. Read each profile for its specific context; a mention alone does not establish composition, performance or use of the pure element.

For periodic-table data and other properties, consult the Royal Society of Chemistry periodic table.

Research and prototypes

Battery-free wireless implant sensors

Researchers have built flexible wireless sensors that can detect water getting through the protective coating of an implant, without an onboard battery. The tests so far are laboratory, explanted tissue and post-mortem experiments, not monitoring in living patients.

Research and prototypes

Bioresorbable (transient) electronics

Bioresorbable electronics are working circuits, sensors and stimulators made from materials designed to dissolve in the body after a set time. They aim to provide temporary implants, such as short-term pacemakers or brain pressure monitors, that never need surgical removal.

Pilot and early commercial

Enhanced rock weathering

Enhanced rock weathering spreads finely crushed silicate rock, such as basalt, on farmland so that it dissolves and locks CO2 into carbonate. Field trials show measurable removal and some yield gains, but removal is mostly calculated rather than measured, and estimates of scale and cost vary widely.

Research and prototypes

Optical atomic clocks

Optical atomic clocks keep time by counting the oscillations of light that atoms or ions absorb, which occur at much higher frequencies than the microwaves used by today's caesium standard. Laboratory systems now report systematic uncertainties near 10⁻¹⁸, and the BIPM is preparing a redefinition of the SI second based on optical transitions, with CGPM adoption anticipated in 2030 or later.

Lab demonstration

Seawater electrolysis

Seawater electrolysis uses electricity to split seawater directly into hydrogen and oxygen, without first removing the salt. Laboratory and small-device studies report long test runs, but no complete system has yet been shown to be cheaper, cleaner or more reliable than purifying water first.
