Soybean gene knockout reported to raise pod number and yield per plant

What was demonstrated
The Chinese Academy of Sciences announced on 14 January 2026 that CRISPR-Cas9 disruption of the soybean gene GmCKX3 increased pod number and seed yield per plant, with increases described as exceeding 40%. The release says the gains were especially marked under high-density planting conditions, and that lodging resistance was unaffected, seed oil content was unchanged and protein content showed a modest increase. The release does not give a planting density value, the control used, the number of sites or seasons, or the sample size.
Why it matters
If the gain holds in replicated field trials across sites and seasons, a single-gene edit that raises soybean yield under dense planting could be relevant to soybean breeding. The release does not give the trial design, so the result cannot yet be judged against other edited crops or against conventional varieties.
Caveats
- The research paper was not read directly. The figures come from the institute's own announcement. Crossref lists the paper (Knockout of a cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase boosts soybean yield, Plant Communications, DOI 10.1016/j.xplc.2025.101678) in its April 2026 issue.
- The release does not say which trait the figure of more than 40% applies to, or what it is compared with.
- The release does not state whether the work was carried out in the field, and it gives no planting density value, so the result may not apply under standard planting densities.
- The release is an announcement, not a peer-reviewed record, and the effect size has not been checked against the full paper.
