What was demonstrated

The arXiv preprint reports an experimentally evaluated 400 Gb/s single-fibre optical transceiver built from 2.5D co-packaged optical I/O chipsets on a SiON/Si interposer. The abstract reports clear eye diagrams and high receiver sensitivity, but gives no sensitivity value or test conditions. The design uses wavelength-division multiplexing, flip-chip integrated InP electro-absorption modulated lasers and photodetectors, and is described as polarisation-insensitive with high fabrication tolerance.

Why it matters

The preprint suggests that a silicon-oxynitride interposer can support a 400 Gb/s optical transceiver over one fibre. If the full paper supports this, it would bear on the optical I/O that co-packaged optics relies on.

Caveats

  • This is an arXiv preprint and has not been peer reviewed. This record is based on the abstract page only; the full text was not read.
  • The abstract gives no energy per bit, bandwidth density, footprint, transmission distance or bit error rate, so the power and density case for co-packaged optics cannot be judged from it.
  • Receiver sensitivity and eye quality are described in qualitative terms in the abstract, without figures or measurement conditions.
