How far are we from factories that run without people?
Some factories now run long stretches with few or no people on the floor. FANUC's robot cells and a Xiaomi smart factory in Beijing are two examples, and the Xiaomi plant has been in mass production since July 2024. The sources reviewed do not show how many plants run fully lights-out. Most public figures come from the companies that run the plants, and the examples reviewed still rely on people for some maintenance and quality checks.

Close. Early pilots are running in the real world.
Robot cells that run unattended for long periods are in use, and one large phone plant has been in mass production since July 2024. Even so, the sources reviewed do not count how many sites run without staff, the output and staffing figures mostly come from the operators themselves, and the examples reviewed still need people for some maintenance and quality checks. Robot density is widespread, but it does not show how many plants run without people.

The road so far
3 of 5 steps done, 1 in progress.
- Done · 2024Robots widely installed in factories
The International Federation of Robotics reports 2024 robot density in manufacturing of 267 robots per 10,000 employees in Western Europe, 204 in North America and 131 in Asia. South Korea is highest at 1,220 and the United States is at 307. The 2026 release gives China as 166, based on updated labour market data. The 2024 release gives China as 470 for 2023, and the 2026 release does not say how much the figure was revised, so the two may not be directly comparable. Density divides robots by employees, so it does not show whether a plant runs without staff. [1][2]
- DoneRobot cells running unattended for long periods
Lux Research reports that FANUC has run 22 lights-out factories since the early 2000s, using robots to make CNC machines, and that its robots can run unsupervised and without maintenance for as long as a month at a time. The article is from 2021, and this has not been checked against a current FANUC statement. [3]
- Done · Jul 2024Large phone plant in production
Yicai reports that Xiaomi's Beijing smart factory began mass producing phones by 9 July 2024, with an investment of CNY2.4 billion (USD330.2 million). Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder, described the factory as highly automated, with 11 phone lines and capacity of up to 10 million flagship phones a year. These are capacity claims, not measured output. Yicai gives no automation percentage and no staffing figures. BGR, a 2026 article that cites unnamed company reports, says the plant operates without any human workers on site. Yicai does not say this. [4][5]
- In progressAutomating inspection, maintenance and repair
Lux Research says companies want to automate manual inspection, maintenance and repair, because these tasks cause planned downtime. In the examples it cites, Philips's lights-out razor plant is staffed by 128 robots and nine quality assurance workers, and the GE plant, which closed in 2010, had a few workers maintaining the machines. [3]
- Not startedLights-out operation at many sites with published data
The sources reviewed do not include an independent dataset of lights-out plants with measured output, uptime or staffing. Lux Research describes the move to lights-out as a multistep process rather than a switch that can be flipped. [3]
Why it matters
A factory that runs with few people changes what workers do, how a plant is kept safe, and how quickly it recovers from a fault. Whether these methods spread beyond a handful of sites depends on those questions, and on whether independent figures show that output holds up.
What stands in the way
- Maintenance and repair still involve people in the examples reviewed. Lux Research says manual inspection and repair cause planned downtime, which is why companies want to automate them.
- Most public figures come from the companies that run the plants. The sources reviewed give no measured output, uptime or staffing figures for Xiaomi's Beijing smart factory.
- Fixed tooling makes a fully automated line hard to change. Lux Research reports that IBM's 1980 lights-out keyboard plant in Texas was shut down because its fixed tooling could not adapt to product variations.
- The FANUC example rests on a 2021 secondary source, not a current company statement.
- Robot density counts robots per employee across factories. It does not show how many sites run without people.
Signals to watch
- A published output, uptime and staffing report from a lights-out plant that is independent of the operator.
- Lights-out lines that keep their output steady while manual inspection and repair are automated.
- A current FANUC statement with a figure for how long its cells run unattended.
- A lights-out line that switches between products without changing its fixed tooling.
- The next International Federation of Robotics release on robot density in manufacturing, including the sector and country coverage it uses.
